Tata Altroz CNG Variant Launched: Know Everything

Tata Motors has just made a move that the Indian hatchback segment has been waiting for. On May 12, 2026, the company officially launched the Tata Altroz iCNG with a 5-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) gearbox — making the Altroz the first and only premium hatchback in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG powertrain paired with an automatic transmission. If you have been holding off on a CNG car because of the hassle of a manual gearbox in city traffic, this launch is aimed squarely at you.

Here is everything you need to know about the new Tata Altroz CNG variant — prices, specs, features, safety, rivals, and why it matters.

Why This Launch Matters

CNG as a fuel choice is no longer a fringe option in India. According to data shared by Tata Motors at the launch, CNG penetration in India grew from 19% in FY25 to 22% in FY26. What is more significant is that this growth is no longer restricted to traditional CNG-heavy markets like Delhi-NCR or Gujarat — new regions are rapidly adopting CNG as their preferred fuel choice. With rising petrol prices and city traffic worsening every year, the demand for a CNG car that also offers the comfort of an automatic gearbox was a clear and growing gap in the market.

Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., summed it up at the launch: "With the introduction of AMT in the iCNG line-up, we are addressing a clear and growing customer need for greater convenience in CNG vehicles."

The Altroz iCNG AMT fills that gap in a segment where rivals like the Maruti Baleno CNG and Toyota Glanza CNG are only available with a manual gearbox, and the Hyundai i20 does not even offer a CNG option at all.

Variant Lineup and Prices

The Altroz iCNG AMT is offered in five variants. The base Smart CNG trim continues only with the 5-speed manual. The AMT option starts from the Pure variant upward. Here is a full breakdown of the CNG variant pricing (all prices ex-showroom):

Altroz Smart CNG (Manual): Rs 7.22 lakh Altroz Pure CNG (Manual): Rs 8.09 lakh | Pure CNG AMT: Rs 8.69 lakh Altroz Pure S CNG (Manual): Rs 8.67 lakh | Pure S CNG AMT: Rs 9.25 lakh Altroz Creative CNG (Manual): Rs 9.17 lakh | Creative CNG AMT: Rs 9.72 lakh Altroz Creative S CNG (Manual): Rs 9.60 lakh | Creative S CNG AMT: Rs 10.15 lakh Altroz Accomplished S CNG (Manual): Rs 10.21 lakh | Accomplished S CNG AMT: Rs 10.77 lakh (top-spec)

The AMT option commands a premium of Rs 55,000 to Rs 60,000 over the respective manual variants. The full Altroz lineup — including petrol and diesel — now spans from Rs 6.30 lakh to Rs 10.77 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most versatile hatchbacks on sale in the country today.

Engine and Performance Specs

The Altroz iCNG is powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated Revotron petrol engine fitted with a factory-installed dual-cylinder CNG kit. The same 5-speed AMT unit used in petrol Altroz variants has been adapted for the CNG powertrain.

In CNG mode, the engine produces 73.5 PS of max power and 103 Nm of peak torque at 3,500 rpm. Switch to petrol mode and the figures climb to 88 PS and 115 Nm. The engine displacement stands at 1,199 cc. The drop in performance between petrol and CNG mode is present, as it is in all CNG cars, but real-world reviews note that the difference is minimal in everyday driving conditions.

The CNG variant also allows drivers to start the car directly in CNG mode — a first-in-segment feature — and switch seamlessly between CNG and petrol while driving. In case CNG levels run low, the system automatically switches to petrol mode without any driver input. A quick-fill nozzle further reduces refuelling time at CNG stations.

The Twin-Cylinder Advantage: Boot Space Preserved

One of the biggest practical concerns with any CNG car is boot space. A conventional single large CNG cylinder typically eats into the luggage area severely, making CNG hatchbacks frustrating for family use.

Tata addressed this problem with its iCNG technology through an innovative twin-cylinder setup. Instead of a single large cylinder mounted in or near the boot, the Altroz uses two smaller CNG cylinders placed beneath the luggage floor, storing a combined 60 litres of CNG. This allows the hatchback to retain a usable 210-litre boot even in CNG form — a number that stands significantly higher than most rival CNG hatchbacks.

For a family buying a CNG car for daily use, this practical advantage is not a minor detail. It is one of the core reasons the Altroz iCNG has earned consistent appreciation from owners and reviewers since its introduction.

Features: Loaded Across Variants

The Altroz iCNG AMT does not ask you to compromise on features in exchange for fuel efficiency. The top Accomplished S AMT variant gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch digital driver's display, an electric single-pane sunroof, a wireless phone charger, keyless entry, ambient lighting, an 8-speaker music system, automatic climate control, and rain-sensing wipers.

The infotainment system is sourced from Harman and runs smoothly with minimal lag, a point noted in multiple reviews of the facelifted model. The two-spoke illuminated steering wheel — shared with Tata's Curvv, Harrier, and Safari — adds a premium touch to the cabin.

Other comfort additions include a 360-degree camera with blind spot monitoring, extended under-thigh support for improved seating posture, rear AC vents, two 65W USB Type-C ports, and a USB Type-A port.

It is worth noting that since the iCNG AMT tops out at the Accomplished S trim and not the top-of-the-line Accomplished Plus S, a few features are not available — including the connected car technology suite, air purifier, custom audio modes, and a blind view monitor. Buyers who want those features will need to opt for the Accomplished Plus S, which is available only with petrol.

Safety: Segment Leader

Safety has always been a strong card in the Altroz's hand, and that continues with the CNG variants. Built on Tata's ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) platform, the Altroz holds a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating across petrol, diesel, and CNG versions — making it one of the safest hatchbacks on sale in India.

Standard safety equipment on the iCNG AMT includes 6 airbags, electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, reverse parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and rain-sensing wipers.

The iCNG safety system itself is multi-layered. A microswitch cuts engine ignition the moment the fuel lid is opened and reactivates only when the lid is securely shut. The system has been tested across a wide range of temperatures and pressures to prevent gas leaks. In the event of a thermal incident, CNG supply to the engine is instantly cut off. A dedicated leak detection system automatically switches the car from CNG to petrol mode if a gas leak is detected. A fire extinguisher is also placed beneath the co-driver's seat for accessible emergency use.

Mileage: Real-World Numbers

Tata Motors has not released official ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figures for the Altroz CNG. However, real-world test data from CarWale showed the CNG Altroz returning 19.80 km/kg in city conditions and an impressive 34.58 km/kg on the highway. Owner reports on forums suggest figures between 27 to 32 km/kg in mixed conditions, which is excellent for a premium hatchback. Given the rising price of petrol, running costs on CNG translate into very significant savings for high-mileage city commuters.

Rivals: How Does It Stack Up?

The Altroz iCNG AMT's primary rivals are the Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG and the Toyota Glanza CNG. Both of these, however, are offered only with a manual gearbox and limit CNG availability to lower, more basic trims. The Hyundai i20, which rounds out the premium hatchback trio, does not offer a CNG option at all.

This gives the Altroz a clear, segment-exclusive advantage: it is the only B2-segment hatchback in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG powertrain with an automatic transmission. Add the 5-star BNCAP safety rating, the twin-cylinder boot-preserving CNG setup, and the diesel engine option (also a segment exclusive), and the Altroz makes a strong case as the most versatile premium hatchback available in India right now.

Verdict: Should You Buy It?

If you drive predominantly in city traffic, want to reduce fuel costs, and have been put off by the manual-only CNG options available so far, the Tata Altroz iCNG AMT is a genuinely compelling option. Starting at Rs 8.69 lakh for the Pure AMT and going up to Rs 10.77 lakh for the Accomplished S AMT, it is priced at a modest premium over the manual CNG variants — a premium that is easy to justify given the convenience it delivers.

The combination of a segment-first CNG AMT, usable boot space, premium features, and a 5-star safety rating puts the Altroz in a position no rival hatchback currently occupies. For the urban buyer who wants economy without the fatigue of stop-and-go manual driving, the Tata Altroz iCNG AMT may well be the most complete hatchback in its price bracket today.
